One of our jobs in Harpenden: a strip of old patio lifted along the lawn, the slabs stacked on the grass, and one of the team at work by the fence

// Work with us

You do the work. We deal with the rest.

Groundworkers, landscapers, pavers, fencers and labourers, within about 20 miles of Dunstable. We price the job and deal with the client. You build it properly, and you never have to chase the homeowner for money.

Harpenden, one of our jobs

// Why work with us

What you get working with us.

  • You never chase the client.

    You’re paid by us, not by the homeowner, on terms agreed before you start. We pay weekly, by bank transfer, whether or not the homeowner has paid us yet. Chasing the client is our job, not yours.

  • No pricing, no running about.

    We price the job, deal with the client, order the materials and book the machines and skips. You turn up and build.

  • Work you’d put your name to.

    We price each job to the full spec, so there’s no pressure to skimp. We check the levels and drainage before we dig. A membrane under every patio, a stone base laid in layers and compacted, and a full mortar bed under porcelain and stone slabs. We guarantee the base under every patio and driveway for 10 years, so it has to be right.

  • Run by a tradesman.

    Chris has worked on the tools himself, and he manages every job. You’re dealing with someone who knows the work.

  • Room to grow.

    For the right person, running jobs as a foreman is where it can lead. It’s earned on our jobs, not handed out.

What we won’t do is promise you work every week. Ask us what’s booked in and we’ll tell you straight.

Luton, mid-buildPart-way through a garden we built in Luton: a membrane and steel mesh laid inside a timber-edged base, with two of the team levelling soil beyond

// The roles

Who we’re looking for.

Subcontractors

  • Your day rate, agreed before you start
Apply as a sub

Labourers

Heavy outdoor work in all weathers, alongside experienced tradespeople. You’re reliable and keen to learn. Some site experience helps, but it isn’t essential.

Employed roles

There’s no employed vacancy right now. When we take on our first employed people, we expect them to come from the subbies and labourers we already work with. So the way in is to work with us first. Register your interest and we’ll keep your details.

// What we look for

The standard we work to.

If this sounds like you, we’d like to hear from you.

  1. You turn up when you say you will.

    If something comes up, you tell us early.

  2. You build it right, including the parts nobody sees.

    The base, the falls, the bedding. We’ll go through the spec with you before you start.

  3. You leave it tidy.

    Tidy at the end of every working day. We’re in people’s gardens, often with them at home.

  4. You speak up.

    Find something unexpected in the ground, or something doesn’t look right? Stop and tell us before you carry on.

  5. You’re decent with clients.

    Polite, and you treat their home like your own.

// How it works

Four steps, no CV.

  1. 1

    Apply

    A few questions about your trade and setup. Add photos of your work if you’ve got them.

  2. 2

    A quick call

    If it looks like a fit, we ring you to talk about your work, your rate and the jobs we do. Usually within a few working days.

  3. 3

    A paid trial day

    A day with us on a real job, and you’re paid for it at the rate we agree on the call. It’s a chance for both of us to see if it works.

  4. 4

    Work, when there’s work that suits you

    If the trial goes well, we may call you when we have a job for your trade. We can’t promise how often.

// Questions

What trades ask us.

What do you pay subbies and labourers?

We agree a day rate with you on the call, before you do any work, and pay weekly by bank transfer. Subs can put their rate on the form, but don’t have to.

Is the work regular?

We won’t promise every week, because we can’t. When we’ve got jobs that suit your trades, we call you.

Is it CIS?

We go through how you’re paid, CIS included, on the call, so you know exactly where you stand before you start.

What area do you cover?

Within about 20 miles of Dunstable. That’s Luton, Leighton Buzzard, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes and the towns and villages in between.

Do I need my own van and tools?

Not to apply. Tell us what you’ve got and we’ll talk it through. For regular subcontract work we’d expect your own transport and hand tools. Labourers need to get themselves to site, and we sort the tools for the job. We order the materials and hire in the machines.

Do you take on labourers with no experience?

Sometimes, if you’re reliable and keen to learn. Tell us about yourself on the form.
