How long does a patio take to build?
It depends on the size, the ground and the access, so we don’t guess. As one example, Sharon’s patio was finished in five days. Before we start, you get a confirmed window for the work, agreed with you.
Porcelain or sandstone?
Porcelain is hard-wearing, easy to clean and keeps its colour, so it suits a modern, low-maintenance garden. Sandstone is a natural stone with variation in every slab, which suits older houses and softer gardens, and it needs a little more care. We bring both to the design call so you can compare. Can you lay limestone or granite?
Yes. Porcelain and Indian sandstone are the two most people choose, but we also lay limestone, granite and block paving, in a range of colours. We’ll talk through the options on the design call.
What goes under the patio?
We dig out, lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base (crushed stone, laid and compacted in layers), then bed every slab on a full mortar bed. It’s the part you never see, and the part that decides whether the patio stays flat, which is why it carries our ten-year structural guarantee.
Can you build a patio on a sloping garden?
Can you match new paving to what I already have?
Often, yes, depending on what’s still made. We look for the closest match and talk you through it before anything is ordered. On a recent driveway in Milton Keynes, the neighbours commented on how the new block work blends with the old.
Do you take the old patio and the waste away?
Yes. Digging out the old surface and taking the waste away is part of the job.
Do I need planning permission for a patio?
Usually not for a patio at ground level in a back garden. A raised terrace can be different, so we check it at the consultation.
Is the price fixed?
Yes. The price on your proposal is the price you pay. It only changes if you change the design, or if we uncover something nobody could have seen beforehand, like a buried structure. Either way, nothing changes until you’ve agreed it in writing.
