// The brief

Two cars on a drive for four.

Phil's drive only fitted two cars, and everyone in the family has their own. Beside it, old laurel and box hedging grew close to the house.

The drive was already brindle block paving, but it only took two cars. Alongside it, a bed of laurel, box hedging and old shrubs ran right up to the house. Phil was worried the roots were getting big enough to start damaging the foundations.

He wanted all of it out, and the drive taken over to the house in the same block, so the new paving finished seamlessly with the old.

// What we did

What we changed.

We took out the hedging and shrubs, root balls and all, so nothing was left to grow back towards the house. We dug down and laid a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, the crushed stone layer that carries the cars, over a membrane that stops it sinking into the soil. The new brindle blocks were matched to the old drive in colour and level, and cut in at an angle to the corner of the house. On site we left out the shingle strip planned along the wall: held between edges, it would have trapped water against the house. The blocks run up to the wall instead, sloping away from it. Phil asked for a hedge back, so we planted 16 red robin in fresh topsoil, set further out from the house than the old laurel.
