// The brief

Weeds in every joint.

Sharon's patio sits right outside the back of the house. The old slabs were stained, with weeds growing up through the joints.

The old patio ran across the back of the house. Its slabs had gone dark and stained, and weeds had grown up through the joints. Old timber sleepers made the step up to the lawn, and they were worn too.

// Before and after

From weeds in the joints to a patio she uses.

Both are real photos of this job, taken before we started and when we finished.

// What we did

What we changed.

We took up the old patio and relaid it in standard beige concrete slabs, which was what Sharon wanted. Along the back and the side we built new edging from green sleepers (pressure-treated pine: the trade calls them green, though the colour is closer to natural pine). The same sleepers make a small retaining wall for the step up to the lawn. A strip of shingle runs between the paving and the sleepers on the side. We also fitted a recessed access cover: a shallow tray filled with the same slabs, so it sits flush and blends in. The work took five days on site, and Sharon now sits out there for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
